Edgar Henry Hazelden was born in Cuckfield, Sussex. Giving his trade as a Labourer, he enlisted at Brighton on 8th April 1895. He served at home in the UK until 21st December 1899 when he was posted to South Africa along with the 2nd Battalion, East Kent Regiment where he was present during the Boer War at the Relief of Kimberley on 15th February 1900, and in action at Paardeberg on 17th to 26th February 1900, and then at Driefontein on 10th March 1900 as well as on operations in Transvaal.
He returned to the UK on 2nd October 1902 and was discharged on 7th April 1907.
