Boer War casualty pair awarded to Private F. Gerkins, 1st later 2nd Battalion, East Kent Regiment – the Buffs who initially saw service in India during the operations leading to the Relief of Chitral before transferring to the 2nd Battalion, East Kent Regiment – the Buffs with whom he was present on operations at the Relief of Kimberley on 15th February 1900, in action at Paardeberg on 17th to 26th February 1900, and at Driefontein on 10th March 1900, as well as on operations in the Transvaal. He died of disease at Pretoria on 5th June 1902.

Frederick William Gerkins saw service as a Private (No. 2844) initially with the 1st Battalion, East Kent Regiment – the Buffs in India during the operations leading to the relief of Chitral which lasted from 7th March to 15th August 1895.
Subsequently transferring to the 2nd Battalion, East Kent Regiment he would see service in South Africa during the Boer War being present on operations at the Relief of Kimberley on 15th February 1900, in action at Paardeberg on 17th to 26th February 1900, and at Driefontein on 10th March 1900, as well as on operations in the Transvaal.
Gerkins died of disease at Pretoria on 5th June 1902.
