George Smith was born in Westminster, Kent and was residing in Stone, near Dartford Kent when he attested at Canterbury on 9th February 1893. He would re-engage for a further five years for militia service only on 21st May 1898 before being embodied as a Private on 18th January 1900 subsequently seeing service as Private (No. 4131) with the 3rd Battalion, East Kent Regiment – the Buffs in South Africa during the Boer War on operations in Cape Colony and Orange Free State.
Smith would be disembodied on 17th July 1902 and discharged upon the termination of his engagement on 8th February 1903.
