Battle of Abu Klea Egyptian War pair awarded to Private G. Smith, 1st Battalion, Royal Sussex Regiment who saw service during the attempt to relieve General Gordon at Khartoum and then at the Battle of Abu Klea on 17th January 1885.

George Smith was born in Cuckfield near Brighton, Sussex and attested on 27th May 1882, initially seeing service at home until on 10th November 1882 when he would travel to Egypt. He subsequently saw service in Egypt and the Sudan, and took part in the attempt to relieve General Gordon at Khartoum, being confirmed as present in action at the Battle of Abu Klea on 17th January 1885. He would travel home on 12th September 1885 and would be discharged on 26th May 1894 with his character being given as very good.
