James Lynch was born in Birmingham and giving his trade as a Filer attested at Birmingham on 11th October 1862 and would initially serve as a Private with 58 Company with the Portsmouth Division with whom he would serve until 21st November 1865 when he joined Malacca with whom he served until 9th September 1869 when he was paid off. He would then join the Portsmouth Division from 10th September 1869 until 30th September 1870, when he embarked Asia, serving aboard from 1st October 1870 until 30th September 1872 when he returned back to Portsmouth.
He would remain at Portsmouth until joining Simoom on 17th July 1873, transferring to Druid on 12th August 1873, serving aboard in West Africa during the Ashantee War and being 1 of 212 men of the ship to be awarded the medal without clasp.. He would be invalided on 16th February 1874 and would then spend a month in hospital before being posted to No. 34 Company on 19th March 1874 from which he was finally invalided out to 16th December 1874.
