George Simmons was born in Kingston, Portsmouth, Hampshire on 30th November 1841 and would see service aboard Asia as a Stoker 2nd Class from 1st March 1867, transferring to Argus on 19th June 1867 and being promoted to Stoker on 25th December 1867, he would serve aboard HMS Banterer between 23th June 1869 and 12th April 1871, and then the Duke of Wellington from 13th April 1871 until 18th September 1872, before joining the troopship H.M.S. Tamar aboard which he would take part in operations during the Third Anglo-Ashanti War of 1873 to 1874. He would complete his service aboard Asia between 22nd May 1875 and 9th February 1877 when he was invalided.
