James Blinco was born in the parish of St. Mary’s, Warwick in 1846 and would go on to join the Portsmouth Division, Royal Marine Light Infantry on 25th May 1866, remaining there until 28th February 1868, before joining Hibernia from 29th February 1868 to 24th June 1870, Psyche from 25th June 1870 to 31st December 1870, Hibernia from 1st January to 25th January 1871, Crocodile from 26th January to 4th February 1871 before returning to the Portsmouth Division from 5th February 1871 until 5th November 1872. He would then serve with Druid from 6th November 1872 until 17th January 1873 and Flora from 18th January 1873 to 13th April 1873.
He would go on to see service as a Private with the Royal Marines including in West Africa during the Ashantee War of 1873-4 whilst attached to H.M.S. Rattlesnake, 1 of 295 men of this ship to receive an Ashantee Medal without clasp.
He is noted as having been discharged on 25th March 1874.
