James Bartlett was born in Longworth, Farringdon, Berkshire in 1838 and would see service with the 2nd Battalion, 23rd Regiment of Foot – Royal Welsh Fusiliers as a Private (No. 693). He would see service in West Africa at the Gold Coast during the Ashantee War of 1873 to 1874.
This relatively short war was fought against fierce foe under extremely trying circumstances, and casualties were high. 607 medals were awarded to the 2nd Battalion, 23rd Foot for the conflict.
