William Venner was born at Tiverton, Devon and enrolled in the 1st Devon Militia, receiving his release certificate, enlisted at Exeter on 20th January 1860 into the 15th Company, Royal Marines. Joined the Royal Marine Artillery on 29th April 1864, re-engaging on 1st April 1869 and would see service in the Ashantee War in West Africa in 1873-74.being 1 of 301 men of HMS Barracouta to receive the medal without clasp. He would be discharged at the completion of his service on 4th August 1881.
