Alfred Stubbs was born in Birmingham on 4th March 1867 and would enlist at Birmingham on 4th March 1867 giving his trade as Gun Finisher and subsequently seeing service with No.14 Company, Royal Marine Artillery. He would see service in West Africa during the Ashantee War of 1873 to 1874, and at the capture of Coomassie on 4th February 1874 being 1 of 50 men of Druid to receive the Ashantee Medal with clasp Coomassie.
