Thomas Gayes was born in Mile End, London in 1850 and having enlisted saw service as a Private (No. 2225) with ‘E’ Company, 2nd Battalion, Rifle Brigade and is confirmed as having served in West Africa during the Ashantee War of 1873 to 1874, and the capture of Coomassie on 4th February 1874. His conduct upon discharge on 18th May 1875 after 4 years and 233 days is given as indifferent having appeared seven times in the Regimental Defaulters Book and once tried by court-martial.
