Awarded to Private (No. 1755) Robert Howard, 2nd Battalion, Rifle Brigade who at the time of the 1871 census was noted as Dover. He is then confirmed as having served in West Africa during the Ashantee War of 1873 to 1874, and at the capture of Coomassie on 4th February 1874.
