Robert James Quinn was born in the parish of Fredericton in the county of York, in what is modern day New Brunswick, Canada. He would attest with the 76th Regiment of Foot at Fredericton on 28th April 1855, aged 19, giving his trade as labourer. He would serve for two and a half years in North America, and 7 years in the East Indies.
Discharged on 7th October 1874 through debility and obstinate diarrhoea probably due the result of exposure during his service in India. He served 19 years and was in the possession of 4 Good Conduct badges with only one entry in the defaulters book and had never been tried by court martial.
