Charles May was born at St. Johns, Devize in 1841 and enlisted into the 2/22nd Regiment at Woolwich on 28th September 1860, aged 19 years, for a bounty of £2 and a free kit. Fount to belong to Royal Wiltshire Militia as No. 2286, for which he had attested on 8th January 1859. His service in the line was not reckoned towards his pension until 8th January 1864.
He would transfer to the 2nd Battalion, 13th Regiment on 31st October. Re-engaged at Portland 8th June 1868 to complete 21 years service, he would forfeit three years and 101 days of serve on 3rd February 1869. Before later being discharged at Netley on 27th December 1881 and being awarded a Pension of 1s/1d per diem for life, with his intended place of residence being Sheep Street, Devizes, Wiltshire. He had seen a total of 21 years and 90 days, serving in Malta, Gibraltar, Mauritius and the East Indies. His Long Service and Good Conduct Medal was awarded on 1st January 1880, with £5 gratuity.
