James O’Neil was born in Drimoleague, County Cork and was discharged on 27th June 1866 having seen 19 years and 155 days of service including 9 years and 5 months overseas, 4 years and 1 month at the Cape of Good Hope and 5 years 4 months in India.
He would be discharged as unfit for further service with his conduct been noted as very good, he would be in possession of five good conduct badges, and had never appeared in the Regimental Defaulter’s Book nor tried by court-martial.
