Army Long Service and Good Conduct Medal, Victoria small letter reverse awarded to Private J. McDonaugh, Devonshire Regiment, later of the 1st Battalion, 17th Regiment of Foot, 2nd Battalion, 11th Regiment of Foot and 1st Battalion, 24th Regiment of Foot who saw service in South Africa during the Zulu War as one of the replacements for the Regiment’s heavy losses at Isandlwana and Rorke’s Drift.

James McDonaugh was born at Linglass, Dublin and attested on 29th May 1869 giving his trade as Labourer joining the 1st Battalion, 17th Regiment of Foot until 29th May 1869 when he would transfer to the 2nd Battalion, 11th Regiment of Foot with whom he would serve in India. He would finally transfer to the 1st Battalion, 24th Regiment of Foot on 21st February 1879, landing in South Africa on 1st March 1879 taking part in the Zululand campaign before returning to Gosport on 2nd October 1879, moving to Salford on 1st March 1880 and Preston from 16th March 1880. He would board H.M.S. Malabar on 3rd March 1881 travelling to India and landing there on 1st April 1881.
He would be present at Jullundur from 12th April 1881, and would remain in India until boarding H.M.S. Malabar on 15th January 1891, arriving in England on 11th February 1891 and being discharged on 24th February 1891.
He is additionally entitled to a South Africa Medal 1877-1879, clasp 1878-9.
