Army Long Service and Good Conduct Medal, Victoria small letter reverse, awarded to Private J. Cooling, Devonshire Regiment who saw 21 years and 143 days service, the majority of which was in India where he would also take part in the Afghanistan War of 1878-1880.

John Cooling was born at Stock Churchill near Weston Super Mare and giving his trade as labourer enlisted at Exeter on 18th September 1878, he would travel to India on 6th March 1879 and would see service during the Second Afghanistan War, earning entitlement to an Afghanistan Medal 1878-1880. He would remain in India until 15th January 1891 when he would return home to the UK. Remaining in the UK for just under two years he would return to India from 17th December 1892 until 3rd November 1899 when he would once more return to the UK for his discharge on 7th February 1900 after 21 years and 143 days service.
He had suffered an accident at Jullunder in India in 1899, whilst not on duty he would fracture his right arm.
