Charles Lingley saw service as a Private (No. 39909) with the 44th (East Essex) Regiment of Foot and would see service in Crimea during the Crimean War where he would be present in the operations around Sebastopol. He would be discharged at Warley on 8th December 1873 having seen 18 years and 150 days service, of which 5 years and 9 months was overseas, including 1 year 8 months in Crimea, and 10 months in China, the rest of the time being spent in the East Indies.
Discharged unfit for further service his conduct was noted as being very good and he was in possession of four good conduct badges, a Crimea Medal with clasp Sebastopol and Turkish Crimea Medal. He had never been in the Regimental Defaulters Book and had bever been tried by court martial.
