Francis McMahon was born in Agra, India and giving his trade as a Carpenter attested on 11th July 1876 initially seeing service in India until he would travel to Afghanistan on 13th November 1878 taking part in the Second Afghan War and being present at the Battle of Ali Musjid on 21st November 1878. Returning back to India on 17th August 1879 he would remain there until travelling back to the UK on 10th March 1882. On 10th June 1885 he would travel to the Mediterranean and then on 18th December 1885 he would travel to Egypt.
Returning home on 10th August 1886 he remained there until his discharge on 10th July 1897, receiving his Long Service and Good Conduct Medal in Army Order 42/97 of 1st April 1897.
