George Philip Clawson was born in the parish of St. Gabriels, Bristol and giving his trade as a Labourer enlisted on 13th August 1891 seeing service with the Royal Artillery. He would initially serve at home from 13th August 1891 until on 22nd September 1893 he travelled to India. He would remain in India for 5 years and 5 months before travelling back to the UK on 3rd February 1899 where he would then remain for over 16 years. He would be awarded the Long Service and Good Conduct Medal in Army Order 754 of 1910.
Still serving on the outbreak of war, his medal index card in the name of G.P. Clawson shows him serving on the Western Front from 17th November 1915 as a Warrant Officer Class II (No. RA/85970). He would survive the war, being discharged with entitlement to a Silver War Badge.
