Valentine West saw service as a Private and at one point Lance Corporal (No. 1009) with the 2nd Battalion, Middlesex Regiment and was discharged after 21 years service on 16th March 1905, his conduct given as exemplary and it being noted that he had appeared not a single time in the defaulters sheet for the whole of his service. It was noted he worked for 7 years in the coffee shop and was suitable for any position.
