An Officer’s General Service Medal 1918-1962, EIIR, 1 Clasp: Malaya awarded to Captain G. Roth, 15th/19th Hussars who having initially been commissioned into the Royal Artillery on 10th December 1944, saw service with the Royal Electrical Mechanical Engineers and later the 15/19th Hussars during the Malayan Emergency.

George Roth was born on 29th June 1922 and having been a Cadet was appointed a 2nd Lieutenant in the Royal Artillery with effect from 10th December 1944. Promoted War Substantive Lieutenant on 10th June 1945, he was transferred to the Royal Electrical Mechanical Engineers on 1st December 1949. Promoted Captain with a Short Service Commission on 10th December 1950 he saw service with the 15/19th Hussars during the Malayan Emergency, before being released to the Reserve of Officers on 1st September 1958, before Relinquishing his Commission while retaining the rank of Captain on 1st July 1959. Roth died in Bury St. Edmunds, Suffolk in July 1996.
Roth served as the Technical Adjutant of the 15/19th Hussars in Malaya and must have bene kept busy as their armoured cars covered four million miles during their tour of 1954-1957. In addition the regiment is known to have fired 3,500 rounds of 2 pounder ammunition during this time as well as 125,000 rounds from their machine-guns.
It is unusual for a Royal Electrical Mechanical Engineers officer to have his medal named to the unit he served under rather than his parent corps
