An excellent Battle of Beaumont-Hamel Military Medal group awarded to Private, later Serjeant J. Ashworth, 4th Battalion, Middlesex Regiment who saw service on the Western Front from 7th April 1915, later being awarded the Military Medal in the London Gazette of 19th February 1917 for his gallantry during the attack on Beaumont-Hamel on 18th November after all the Officers of his Company had been hit, he continued to lead his men with great resolution and set a fine example by his courage and cheerfulness. He would later be commissioned into the Middlesex Regiment as a Second Lieutenant on 26th June 1917.

John Ashworth would see service as a Private (No. G-7276) with the Middlesex Regiment on the Western Front from 7th April 1915. He would be admitted to Hospital with a septic leg on 15th August 1915, before being returned to his unit on 3rd September 1915.
Ashworth would be awarded the Military Medal in the London Gazette of 19th February 1917 whilst serving with the 4th Battalion, Middlesex Regiment. The citation for the award which is present on the inside lid of the box reads:
‘In the attack on 18th November 1916 at Beaumont-Hamel after all the Officers of his Company had been hit, he continued to lead his men with great resolution and set a fine example by his courage and cheerfulness.’
He would subsequently be commissioned into the Middlesex Regiment from 26th June 1917. His medals would subsequently be sent to 51 Hamer Street, Radcliffe, Manchester.
