An Ashantee Medal 1873-1874, Clasp: Coomassie, awarded to Rifleman T.E. Oakenfull, 2nd Battalion, Rifle Brigade, late East Kent Militia, who saw service out on the Gold Coast of Africa from 21st November 1873, and took part in the Ashantee Campaign which lasted from 3rd December 1873 to 22nd March 1874, being present in action at the battle of Amoaful on 31st January 1874.

Thomas Edward Oakenfull came from Canterbury, Kent, and having worked as a brickmaker and seen service with the East Kent Militia, then attested for service when aged 23 with the British Army at Dover on 17th December 1870, joining as a Rifleman (No.2016) the Rifle Brigade.
Posted from the Depot to the 2nd Battalion, Oakenfull then saw service out on the Gold Coast of Africa from 21st November 1873, and took part in the Ashantee Campaign which lasted from 3rd December 1873 to 22nd March 1874, and was present in action at the battle of Amoaful on 31st January 1874. During this action there were three Europeans killed and 165 wounded.
Posted home on 27th March 1874, Oakenfull was noted as absent without leave from 3rd July 1874, but re-joined two days later, and was then posted to Gibraltar from 17th November 1874, before being posted home again on 21st December 1880 and discharged at Cork on 25th July 1881 being ‘unfit for further service’.
