Alexander Clarke served as a Private (No.707) with the 1st Battalion, West India Regiment, and would have served overseas on the West Coast of Africa from 4th December 1873 to 3rd March 1877, during which time he and his battalion saw service during the Ashantee Campaign of 1873 to 1874, including at the battle of Amoaful on 31st January 1874 and the actions between that place and Coomassie, including the capture of the capital on 4th February 1874, being awarded the Ashantee Medal 1873-1874 with clasp for Coomassie. Medal and clasp entitlement confirmed.
