William Bailey was born in the parish of Ticehurst, near Battle, Sussex and attested for the Royal Artillery on 5 Sept 1844, at the age of 20. He went own to serve over 18 of his 21 years service in India and was present during the Indian Mutiny for which he received the Indian Mutiny Medal. He was discharged in Madras, India, on completion of 21 years service in 1864.
