John Wheller was born in Brompton, London, and by 1881 was serving at Kensington Barracks as a Corporal (No.1320) with the 11th Prince Albert’s Own Hussars. Having been then awarded the Army Long Service and Good Conduct Medal whilst a Troop Sergeant Major with the 11th Hussars, he went on to gain an ‘Annuity’ award of the Army Meritorious Service Medal when ranked as a Sergeant with the 11th Hussars. Wheller died in Leeds, Yorkshire, on 2nd July 1933 when aged 73, having latterly been employed as an Inspector with the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children.
