Petrus Albertus Venter saw service during the Anglo-Boer War of 1899-1902 as a Burgher with the Zoutpansberg Commando, and was on service from October 1899 through to August 1901 when he was taken prisoner and held in captivity till 1903. Venter claimed his Anglo-Boere Oorlog Medal on 17th February 1942 at Pretoria.  

The Anglo-Boere Oorlog Medal 1899-1902 was issued in 1920 by the Union Government to officers and men of the former Boer republics for loyal service in the war against the British. To qualify for the medal proof had to be provided that they had fought against the British without surrendering or taking parole or the oath of allegiance prior to 31st May 1902.
