Samuel Ward saw service as a Private (No.878) with the 2nd Battalion, 8th The King’s Regiment of Foot, and saw service out in India and then during the Second Afghanistan War. Despite his regiment being present at the Battle of Peiwar Kotal in November 1878, it would appear that Ward was not present, and instead arrived later, with Ward being shown on the Muster List as present on in mid 1879.

From January 1880 to March 1881 he is shown as serving in the camp at Peiwar Kotal, and was promoted to Corporal on 8th June 1881, before during in service whilst stationed at Miau Mir on 26th June 1881.
