John Coaward was born in Christchurch, Southampton and enlisted at Christchurch on 25th June 1866 giving his trade as a Bricklayer, he would initially see service at home until on 16th January 1873 he would travel to India later taking part in the Second Afghanistan War as a Driver (No. 4138) with D Battery, B Brigade, Royal Horse Artillery.
He would return home on 4th February 1886 remaining there until his discharge on 5th July 1887.
He is additionally entitled to a Long Service and Good Conduct Medal which was issued to him in Army Order 170 of 1884.
