Afghanistan Medal 1878-1880, 1 Clasp: Ali Musjid awarded to Bombardier P. Hesson, 1 Battery, C Brigade, Royal Horse Artillery a Rough Rider, who saw service in the campaign against the Jowaki Afridis between 9th November 1877 to 19th January 1878, before later taking part in the Second Afghanistan War being present in action at Ali Musjid on 21st November 1878. He would be discharged on 29th January 1883 having been reduced to the ranks from the rank of Corporal.

Peter Hesson was born in the village of Kells, Antrim and giving his trade as a servant enlisted at Ballymena on 14th March 1864 noting previous service with the Antrim Artillery Militia having served in the UK until 10th July 1866 he then travelled to India.
Hesson would have a somewhat troubled time in India, suffering from Cholera during a camp epidemic at Peshawar in June 1867, he would pass a course as a Rough Rider on 15th April 1871 later being wounded in a fall from a horse in Meerut on 21st September 1874, and then suffering a contusion to his foot from an accident fall in Peshawar on 3rd November 1877, just days before his unit would take part in operations against the Jowaki Afridis which lasted from 9th November 1877 to 19th January 1878. Once he had returned from the campaign he would once again fall from his horse at Peshawar on 11th March 1878 suffering another contusion
He would then take part in the Second Afghanistan War being present in action at Ali Musjid on 21st November 1878.
He would suffer a further contusion on an accident at Rawalpindi on 3rd August 1879. His time in India came to a conclusion on 5th March 1881 when he travelled back to the UK, but his run of bad luck would continue when he suffered a wound to the head in an accident at Dorchester on 1st November 1881. He would finally be discharged on 29th January 1883 in consequence of having been reduced to the ranks from the rank of Corporal.
