Henry Chambers was born at Bristol, Somerset on 19th August 1843. He enlisted for service at Fisgard, underage on 3rd November 1859 entering as a Boy 2nd Class. Volunteered for 10 years continuous service on 19th August 1861. Served in Monarch, Cumberland and Arestes.
He went on to serve aboard the 6-gun wooden paddle sloop H.M.S. Spiteful, under Commander Benjamin Langlois Lefroy, and having seen service off the south-east coast of America in 1867, then participated in the 1868 Abyssinian expedition.
Chambers went on to serve aboard the Duke of Wellington from 24th September 1869 until 16th January 1871, from which ship he was discharged.
