Henry Chambers was born at Bristol, Somerset on 19th August 1843. He enlisted for service at Fisgard, underage on 3rd November 1859 entering as a Boy 2nd Class. Volunteered for 10 years continuous service on 19th August 1861. Served in Monarch, Cumberland and Arestes.
He would serve with Spiteful as an Able Seaman during the operations on an off the coast of Abyssinia during the war with that country which lasted from November 1867 to March 1868, and would finally serve with Duke of Wellington from 24th September 1869 until 16th January 1871.
