A vey good Great War Western Front Military Medal and Second World War group awarded to Lance Corporal later Second Lieutenant R.G. Appleby, 18th Battalion, London Regiment (London Irish Rifles) who saw service on the Western Front from 31st May 1915, and who would be awarded the Military Medal in the London Gazette of 16th August 1917 for an action that had taken place in June 1917. On 29th May 1918 he would commissioned into the 13th Battalion, London Regiment – Princess Louise’s Kensington Battalion and would then be attached back to the 18th Battalion, London Regiment (London Irish Rifles) attaining the rank of Lieutenant on 29th November 1919. He would later be recalled in the Second World War, receiving a Regular Army Emergency Commission into the Royal Northumberland Fusiliers on 24th June 1940, he would be promoted to Temporary Captain on 26th September 1944 and would be discharged after the war with the rank of Honorary Captain.

Appleby enlisted into the 18th Battalion, London Regiment (London Irish Rifles), joining the 2nd Battalion, He was drafted to the 1st Battalion in May 1915, proceeding to France to join the 1st Battalion on the 31st May 1915 and would later be awarded the Military Medal in the London Gazette 16th August 1917 for an action that had taken place in June and had been notified by the Headquarters of the 47th (London) Division on 26th June 1917.
Lance Corporal Appleby served with the 11th Battalion, Middlesex Regiment for a short period before being selected for a commission into the 13th Battalion, London Regiment – Princess Louise’s Kensington Battalion on 29th May 1918. After receiving his commission he was attached to the 18th Battalion, London Regiment. Appleby would be promoted to Lieutenant on 29th November 1919.
After the war Appleby would reside at 228 Brecknock Road, Camden, London. He would later receive a Regular Army Emergency Commission into the Royal Northumberland Fusiliers on 24th June 1940 as a Lieutenant. He was promoted to Temporary Captain on 26th September 1944, and would be discharged after the war with the rank of Honorary Captain.
