A very rare Indian Volunteer’s Mesopotamia Military Medal, GVR, awarded to Corporal J.D. Garvan, Bombay, Baroda and Central India Volunteer Rifles attached 6th Battalion, South Lancashire Regiment who was awarded the Military Medal for actions in Mesopotamia in the London Gazette of 2nd April 1918.

J.D. Garvan saw service as a Corporal (No. 5497) with the Bombay, Baroda and Central India Volunteer Rifles, and would be awarded the Military Medal in the London Gazette of 2nd April 1918 for gallantry whilst attached to the 6th Battalion, South Lancashire Regiment in Mesopotamia.
The 6th Battalion, South Lancashire Regiment arrived in Mesopotamia in February 1916 and would take part in the Battle of Kut al Amara in 1917, the capture of the Hai Salient, the capture of Dahra Bend, the passage of the Diyala, The pursuit of the enemy towards Baghdad and the capture of Baghdad, they would end the war near Delli Abbas, north-east of Bahgdad on 31st October 1918.
