Alexander Ottingnon saw service as a Private (No.1015) with the 3rd King’s Own Light Dragoons, and saw service with his regiment in India, it being stationed at Meerut in August 1839, and later that year was stationed at Cawnpore. In mid 1840 his regiment moved to Kurmaul, and in August to September 1841, but with the Afghanistan War, he then moved with his regiment to Jumrood in late 1841, and in April 1842 found himself stationed at Jellalabad. Ottignon was subsequently present in action at the Battle of Kabul on 15th September 1842, being one of 489 men of his regiment to receive the Cabul Medal 1842. Between October and December 1842 he moved with his regiment to Ferozepore, Pareh Walla, and Lundi Khana, and in early 1843 was stationed at Kumanl.
Ottignon then took part in the First Sikh War during the Sutlej Campaign, being present in action at the Battle of Moodkee on 18th December 1845, where 57 men of his regiment were killed out of 519 present, and then at the Battle of Ferozeshuhur from 21st to 22nd December 1845, where 55 men of his regiment were killed out of 446 present, before taking part in the Battle of Sobraon on 10th February 1846.
Ottignon would have been stationed at Umballa in mid 1848, and was then present on operations during the Second Sikh War in the Punjab Campaign, being present in action with 586 men of his regiment at the Battle of Chillianwala on 13th January 1849, and with 565 men of his regiment at the Battle of Goojerat on 21st February 1849. On 31st March 1849 he would have been stationed with his regiment at Meean Meer. Between February and June 1853 his regiment travelled home from India, and Ottignon appears to have been discharged on his return.
