A very fine 1943 Burma operations I.D.S.M. group of four to Lance Naik Sultan Mahmud, 7 Battalion, 14th Punjab Regiment, who, while in command of his section on patrol near the Shandam Pass, encountered a company of enemy, and having moved his section to a small cave, engaged enemy. All the men of his section, including himself, were wounded in the action, during which they used all of their ammunition.

On 1 Apr. 43 L/Nk SULTAN MAHMUD was in command of a section at SHANDAM PASS which went forward on patrol. Whilst returning to the main position the Section encountered about a Company of enemy moving up to attack the Pass. This N.C.O. took his Section to a small cave from which he engaged the enemy. Although all the men of his section were wounded, including himself, they continued to fight until their ammunition was finished. Lance Naik SULTAN MAHMUD showed great courage and determination.
