A superb Egypt and East & West Africa group of four to Paymaster-in-Chief Stanley Edward Elliott, Royal Navy, who whose remarkable service commenced with the Egypt campaign of 1882 followed by operations in the Sudan in 1884, then punitive expeditions against King Koko of Nimby on the River Niger at Brass in 1885 and against the Arab Chief Mburuk at M’wele, and then the capture of Benin City in 1887.

Stanley Edward Elliott was born on 24 Nov 1861 joined the Royal Navy on 16 July 1877. He served as Clerk of the “Alexandra” during the Egyptian War of 1882 and also during the naval and military operations near Suakin in Eastern Soudan in 1884. Then served as Paymaster of “Barrosa” in the punitive expedition under Rear-Admiral Sir Frederick Bedford, K.C.B., former from the “St. George” (Flag), “Thrush”, “Widgeon”, and “Barrosa”, against King Koko, of Nimby, the chief town of Brass, on the River Niger, which was destroyed in February 1895. He next served in the expedition landed by Rear-Admiral Rawson, C.B., Commander-in-Chief, at Mombassa, from the “St. George”, “Phoebe”, Barrosa”, Racoon”, and “Blonde, accompanied by sixty Sudanese and fifty Zanzibar Askaris, for the punishment of Mburuk, a reballious Arab Chief, resulting in the capture of his stronghold at M’weli, on 17th August 1895. As Paymaster of “Barrosa” he served in the punitive expedition commanded by Rear-Admiral Rawson, C.B., and landed from the Squadron to punish the King of Benin for the massacre of the political expedition of 1897, ending in there capture of Benin City on 18 Feb 1897. At the time of the 1911 Coronation Elliott was serving as Fleet Paymaster aboard “King Alfred” and was placed on the Retired List with the rank of Paymaster in Chief on 30 Nov 1916. He died on 9 Jan 1920.
The Royal Navy medal roll for the Great War indicates that Elliott was issued a British War Medal for his WW1 service. It states that the medal was issued on 30th January 1925, some five years after his death. If it exists, the whereabouts of this medal is unknown.
