Charles Harding was born in the parish Billingshurst, Sussex, and attested for the Scots Guards on 19 March 1890. He served in South Africa during the Boer War from 13 Mar 1900 until 1 Apr 1901, and received the Army L.S.G.C. in 1909 having transferred to the Middlesex Regiment in 1908.
His Great War service was recognised by the award of the British War Medal only for service with the 7th Battalion in India. Harding was discharged on 21 Jan 1917 having completed 7 month service in India as Acting Regimental Sergeant-Major.
Having served in the some Civil defence capacity during WW2 for which he received the Defence Medal, Harding would later be awarded the Meritorious Service Medal.
