Gert Pieter Hardus Grobler was born on 22nd August 1905, and came from Boon Station in Transvaal, where he worked as a labourer, before attesting for service with the Union Defence Force at Pretoria on 1st April 1941.

Grobler then joined as a Private (No.242358) the Regiment De La Rey, and saw service in Egypt and on operations in North Africa from 28th April 1943, and then in Italy from 15th April 1944, and was a part of the 6th South African Armoured Division throughout his time in Italy, before being returned to South Africa and released from service on 16th February 1946 in the rank of Corporal.
