A scarce officer’s Cape of Good Hope General Service Medal, 2 clasps: Transkei, Basutoland awarded to Captain W.C.T. Thom, Bredasdorp Burghers who would be present during the Transkei operations in Tembuland and Griqualand East from 13th September 1880 to 15th May 1881, in both of which the native population resorted to armed resistance on being required to hand in their firearms. Their hostility to this development was particularly directed at the settlers in the districts of Tsolo, Maclear, Matatiele and Qumbu, in all of which it became necessary to employ troops to restore order. The operations which resulted in the Basutoland clasp began on the same date, 13th September 1880, and lasted till 27th April 1881. Unique to an officer in this regiment, along with two other ranks recipients.
