John Wootin or John Wootton was a native of Margate, England and was a tailor by trade and saw service in the Crimea as a Private with the 90th Regiment of Foot (Perthshire Volunteers) during the Crimean War in the siege of Sebastopol which lasted from September 1854 through to September 1855.
He would subsequently serve in the Indian Mutiny and would be present during the operations to relieve Lucknow with Sir Colin Campbell’s force at the relief of Lucknow in November 1857.
