William Charles Thomas Potts was born in Worcester and attested for the Grenadier Guards at Cheltenham on 17th April 1893 giving his trade as a valet and seeing service as a Private (No. 4301) with the 1st Battalion, Grenadier Guards. Initially serving at home he would travel to Gibraltar on 2nd April 1898 before travelling to Egypt on 19th July 1898 where he would take part in the reconquest of the Sudan being present during the fighting at Khartoum
Returning home on 8th October 1898 he would be finally discharged on 16th April 1905
