A reconquest of the Sudan and later Boer War service group awarded to Private W. McBean, 1st Battalion, Seaforth Highlanders who having served during the occupation of Crete in 1897 would then take part in the reconquest of the Sudan being present in action at the Battle of the Atbara on 8th April 1898, and the Battle of Omdurman and entry into Khartoum on 3rd September 1898. He would also later serve during the Boer War in South Africa where he would take part in the operations in Cape Colony, Orange Free State and Transvaal.

William McBean was born in Elgin, Inverness-shire, Scotland and attested aged 18 years on 9th July 1895, he would then serve during the occupation of Crete in 1897, and then during the reconquest of the Sudan being present in action at the Battle of the Atbara on 8th April 1898, and the Battle of Omdurman and entry into Khartoum on 3rd September 1898. He would also later serve during the Boer War in South Africa where he would take part in the operations in Cape Colony, Orange Free State and Transvaal.
