A rare Woman’s Great War Military Medal group awarded to Sub Section Leader G.M. Cuthbert, Etaples Convoy, Voluntary Aid Detachment, British Red Cross Society, who having enrolled as a Chauffeuse on 27th December 1916 would be posted to France on 6th March 1917 and would later be awarded the Military Medal in the London Gazette of 30th July 1918 for her gallantry and devotion to duty during an enemy air raid, she showed exceptional coolness and courage in directing her section. 1 of just 127 Military Medal awarded to British and Commonwealth women during the Great War, with 11 being awarded to women of other nationalities.

Galanthe Mildred Cuthbert enrolled in the British Red Cross Society as a Chauffeuse on 27th December 1916, with the certificate No. 17616. She would be posted to France on 6th March 1917 where she worked with the Etaples Convoy Voluntary Aid Detachment, British Red Cross Society on the Western Front.
Cuthbert would become a rare female recipient of the Military Medal when her award was gazetted on 30h July 1918. ‘For gallantry and devotion to duty during an enemy air raid. She showed exceptional coolness and courage in directing her section.’
Later in August 1918, she was posted to the 62nd General Hospital in Italy and promoted to Head Driver with the 26th Motor Ambulance Convoy, subsequently serving in Constantinople between May 1919 and December 1920. She would be awarded the British Red Cross Society Special Service Cross for Gallant Conduct in May 1919.
