John Gwyn Hale was a long serving member of the Royal Navy, who saw service during the Second World War during the Battle of the Atlantic, in the Mediterranean during the attempt to relieve the siege of Malta, and the North West Europe operations. Remaining in the service post-war, he had an extremely active career, being involved in the minesweeping operations which lasted from 3rd September 1945 through to 30th September 1951. Approximately 4800 Minesweeping 1945-51 clasps were issued, with Hale having served as a Petty Officer during the operations.

Hale then transferred to the Fleet Air Arm, and saw service during the Korean War as a Petty Officer Airman, and having been awarded the Royal Navy Long Service and Good Conduct Medal on 24th October 1955 whilst serving with H.M.S Heron, the Royal Naval Air Station at Yeovilton in Somerset, then went on to see service as a Chief Airman during the Radfan operations in the South Arabian Federation in the period from 25th April to 31st July 1964.
