Young, 1 of 537 men who qualified for this medal which was generally awarded to Cape Copper Company employees in the Namaqualand Town Guard, which was formed from the amalgamation of the Ookiep Volunteers, the Concordia Town Guard, and the Port Nolloth Town Guard in October 1901, and also to men of the Ookiep Volunteers. It was awarded to all those from the above mentioned units who took part in the defence of Ookiep during the Boer War in South Africa in early 1902.
