Richard Oliver saw Boer War service as a Gunner (No. 98009) with the Western Division, Royal Garrison Artillery taking part in the operations in Cape Colony. He would later serve during the Great War where he would be present as a Civilian, a Master Reader, with the Army Scripture Readers on the Western Front from 25th November 1914. He is 1 of only 26 men to this unit on the medal roll. His Medal Index Card confirms this as his sole Great War Medal, being ineligible for others, thus a complete group.
