William Thomas Funnell was born in the parish of Christchurch, in St. Leonards, near the town of Hastings, Sussex and attested for the Royal Sussex Regiment at Hastings on 9 Feb 1893. He was 18 years old and a Blacksmith by trade. He transferred to the Militia on 27 May 1898 and recalled for regular service in 1899. Funnell served in South Africa from 29 Feb 1901 until 24 May 1901 with the 3rd Battalion.
