James Ernest Carter was born in Old Ford, London, on 15 Feb 1876 and joined the Royal Marines at Chatham on 19 June 1894. He joined ship’s compliment of the cruiser H.M.S. Forte on 20 Apr 1899 and embarked for South Africa. In November 1899 Carter landed with the Naval Brigade for the Defence of Durban. He received the S. African grant on 21 Oct 1901, paid for services 1899 - 1901, and was paid off at home on 14 May 1902. Carter was discharged in November that year with a payment of £20.. He subsequently enrolled in the Royal Fleet Reserve from which he was discharged medically unfit on 6 Aug 1914. This being his sole entitlement.
